What Makes a Worship Song Worship

Have you ever sang a worship song and moments later turned around and blatantly did what you sang you wouldn’t do? I was driving along one day just singing along in my truck worshiping out loud pouring my heart out to God when some “jerk” pulled in from of me and began tapping his brakes violently. I came out of the spirit so fast it’d make your head spin. I threw my hat on the dash and yelled at the guy wondering what what was his deal.
As soon as he rolled down his window I could see in his side mirror it was my pastor. He was laughing hysterically at me knowing I have a vice; idiot drivers. He called me later to poke at me and tell me he was having a little fun.
So what makes a worship song worship. How is it any different than any other song we sing. Just because the words speak of giving honor and glory to God or the words speak of God’s character, does that make it a worship song? The music can cross all cultural boundaries so I don’t think the style or genre makes a song a worship song.
Let me answer the question. The only way ANY song can be considered a worship song is if the Holy Spirit is in it. We can’t worship God without the Spirit and without it being grounded in truth. Paul said in 1 Cor. 13 without love that our music, our singing, our worship is like a clanging cymbal. It hurts God’s ears. He doesn’t want to hear us if we are not worshiping in spirit and truth.
Amos 5:23 says, “Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not even listen to the sound of your harps.” God is not pleased nor does he even desire to hear us sing praises to Him if we are not willing to be honest before Him.
What makes a worship song worship? If it is sang truthfully, the Spirit takes that song before the Lord and beckons God to listen. It must be filled with the Spirit to be worship. Any other song is just noise to Him and He will not accept that sacrifice of praise! Just as no one can say Jesus is Lord unless it is revealed by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3) no one’s worship is valid except through the Holy Spirit.
