Today, we heard a great message from Ted Welton, and elder in our church. He spoke on Personal Idolatry. It really hit home with me. Not that I’m trying to get everyone to idolize me but more along the lines of what do I idolize that promotes me instead of the message I preach or the God I serve. Which is easy to do when you have CDs and publishing your first book.
Worship was great today. Nothing groundbreaking for me. It was just real good to be in God’s presence with my Xtreme family. We didn’t get much participation with the shouting on When I Think About The Lord. Gonna have to whoop some folks in gear and get that shouting bug back out, lol.
We played Our God and all I had today was keyboard, acoustic guitar and drums so it sounded real different but very nice on the acoustic. I thought is sounded full and rocked just as hard as it would on the electric. Our keyboardist played the pads through the first few songs and played on the lower register to carry the bass. It really works well when you bass player is not at church.
We worked a version of Cult Of Personality very creatively but didn’t get to use it in the service. I had planned on surprising Ted with it but he had already worked up a video using that song. So our worship team played before first service during rehearsal for all those who were in the room to hear it. Then after the second service, we played it as everyone was walking out. It was real fun to play and a neat creative touch we added to it.
LESSON LEARNED – There can be no surprises when being creative for a church service. Everyone needs to know what’s going on.
